Like most towns and villages, Selsey has seen some changes over the last 150 years but the eastern portion of East Street has largely been untouched thanks to its status as a designated Conservation Area known as ‘Old Selsey’ - a testament to the architectural and historical importance of the fisherman’s cottages and buildings which stretch along the length of the street from the Fisherman’s Joy Public House at the junction with Manor Road, down to the Lifeboat Inn in Albion Road.
The only significant change to this part of East Street has been to its name, with this section of the road previously being known as ‘Cotland Lane’, before becoming ‘Fish Lane’ due to the fishing community who were native to this area. By 1899 this part had become known as East Road and later, when the road developed during the 1930’s to extend all the way up to the High Street, the name was changed to East Street.
Fortunately, the preservation of this area has ensured that it has kept much of its original charm and it evokes a sense of nostalgia for many. Nestled among these attractive fisherman’s cottages is ‘Shingle Cottage’ which was built in the 1870s. Although not listed, the house is named as a positive feature in the Conservation Document and is a well proportioned detached property which has retained much of its Period character.
Owned by our vendor for just over 10 years, the property has been redecorated and sympathetically updated during that time, with improvements including a new roof to the extended house and garage in 2014 and the installation of a new gas fired boiler in 2021. The present owner has also spent much time and effort on the beautiful south facing garden which is a particular feature of the property. With three bedrooms, two bathrooms plus a garage and off-street parking, Shingle Cottage is a home that perfectly blends old fashioned character and charm with the comforts of modern day living. It is certainly a property that must be viewed to be fully appreciated!
We have been lucky enough to see some photographs showing East Street and Shingle Cottage in the early and mid 1900’s. We have even recreated one of the images showing the proud new owner of the house in the 1950’s with the help of our very own Selsey office manager, Beverley!
